Reflections on what makes True Transformation Stick
Over the years, I’ve been part of a few “transformations” - and one thing has become crystal clear: most change efforts fall short not because the strategy was wrong, but because the behavioral shifts that really matter never took hold.
What stood out to me is a simple yet powerful insight: transformation isn’t just about alignment and engagement - it’s about performance edge.
Too often, we default to the comfortable themes- better collaboration, higher commitment, clearer goals, continuous improvement, and customer focus. These are necessary, no doubt, and they energize and unite people around purpose.
But if that’s all we lean into, we risk ending up with a transformation that feels good and delivers just ok results.
👉 What separates good from great?
According to McKinsey & Company - the harder, often uncomfortable behaviors like accountability, competitive urgency, disciplined decision-making, capability building, and performance transparency. These are the ones leaders shy away from because they require explicit trade-offs and clear consequences.
From my experience, the real accelerators are the moments when teams:
• stop papering over underperformance and have straightforward accountability conversations,
• embed rigorous performance metrics into daily routines,
• and choose decisive action over endless consensus.
That’s where aspirations become execution.
Transformation isn’t a program - it’s a new operating system for how work gets done, how decisions are made, and how success is measured. Balance the heart (engagement) with the spine (performance discipline), and you unlock results that outlast the initiative.
Curious how others are balancing these dimensions in their organizations - what’s working for you?
